City of Worcester

New England’s second largest city chose ABS to provide controls, metering and integration for dozens of schools and municipal buildings.  Alerton Building Suite software, partnered with ABS’ InSite Energy Dashboard and Reporting System, provides central monitoring and control.  ABS service and technical support teams provide 24/7/365 monitoring and reporting of critical alarms and priority response.

 

Eastern Connecticut State University

ECSU, needed to update the heating system in one of their largest residence halls, the High Rise.  The school also wanted to install an air conditioning unit in the building so as to provide an attractive housing option for students; however, the cost of the additional HVAC system was prohibitive.  ABS provided the solution.

With the new heating system, ABS was able to offer ECSU so much in projected energy bill savings that the addition of an equally energy efficient HVAC system suddenly became a possibility and then a reality.  

ABS also installed their innovative and unique Live Online Energy Dashboard, which uses large flat-panel TVs to display consumption and demand data in each building through a custom Web interface.  The school now hosts contests between the dorms to see who can utilize the lowest amount of energy, a move that encourages savings as well as environmental conservation education among students and staff.

“Over an 18-month period, the university’s new system reduced actual energy costs by 12% compared to the previous system. The High Rise is also using 65,000 kilowatt hours less per year than before . . .

“The ECSU geothermal system runs so much more efficiently than the prior system that it continues to operate below the projected worst-case scenarios for water usage. Though the system offers up to 250,000 gallons per day for heating and cooling, the High Rise actually uses around 35,000 gallons per day—considerably less than DEP limits for daily water flow. ABS controls the water level in the wells to ensure continued compliance.

Mary M. Hooker Environmental Sciences School

The Mary M. Hooker Environmental Sciences Magnet School, located in Hartford, CT, focuses on teaching children in grades K – 8 about the environmental sciences through experiential learning.

It is one of the first schools in New England designed to the USGBC LEED Gold standard.  Several companies collaborated on this project to make it a huge success; when finished, the project earned 10 out of 10 LEED points for Energy Performance.  ABS took an important role in the success of the school project.

Providence College

Providence College, looking to save money while implementing an environmental and energy conservation program contracted with ABS with the intention of decreasing their total energy consumption from 120,000 Btuh/sq ft/yr to 100,000 Btuh/sq ft/yr.  The long-term goal was to achieve carbon neutral status within 5 years.  ABS is helping them to achieve these goals.

In looking for a company to work with originally, Providence College was particularly interested in distinguishing between the innovation and creativity offered by the competing bidders.  They were impressed with the Live Online Energy Dashboard offered by ABS.

Saint Francis Hospital

ABS has completed an extensive energy reduction program for Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center and its affiliated Mount Sinai Rehabilitation Hospital to provide complete, campus-wide monitoring and control of HVAC systems.  As the Greater Hartford premier healthcare provider, Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center again chose ABS to provide effective, reliable controls for their new 10-story, 318,000 square-foot, John T. O’Connell Tower, opened in February 2011.

Waterford Public Schools

The City of Waterford decided to build 6 sustainable schools over a 10 year period beginning in 2003. Though the initial up-front cost was higher, the long-term savings have been substantial.
